Old town from Garden

Monopteros in Garden

Friday, 5 August. We had breakfast at the hotel, then drove back to the city center and through the English Garden (1789), a huge public park right in the center of Munich. It was beautiful and had many attractions. One we particularly wanted to see was the Chinese Tower (1790), but we never did find it.

Then we headed back across Munich and visited the Nymphenburg Palace. The first section was completed in 1665, but building continued for another century. The Palace was exceptionally beautiful and had lovely grounds. Unfortunately, the weather was a bit misty when we arrived. We saw the inside first, and the sun was out bythe time we went outside.

We stayed longer than we expected, then had lunch at a little place right off the palace grounds. No one there understood English, but we had an easier time ordering than we had the night before with the English speaking waiter. The name of the restaurant, incidentally, was the Hofbrauhaus. From the restaurant we drove back across the Alps by way of Garmisch, a much shorter route but with no autobahn. We had supper at a trattoria along the highway just past Rovereto.

There was a heavy fog the last ten miles, but we inched our way through. We got to our home in Verona about 22:00. Knowing we were on our way, Rosa had kept our four boys up, so we had a warm homecoming.
