Monday, October 18. This was the first and only day of our trip on which we did not have anything
specific we had to do. Jane and Gisella were going into Darmstadt to do some shopping. I decided
to go by himself to the Jacoby ancestors' villages. He left about 9 a.m. and got back to Klein-Gerau at
5:30. At 7:00 we took the Marenbachs out to dinner at the same Italian restaurant in Gross-Gerau. We
got back about 9:30 and finished most of our packing.
[NOTE: No description of the visits to the ancestral
villages is included in this journal. They are only briefly mentioned to show
the chronology of our travels. Eventually they will be summarized in more detail
in my genealogy pages.]
HEADING HOME
Tuesday, 19 October. In spite of promising not to bother making breakfast for us, Gisella had a
multi-course meal ready by the time we were dressed. We said our farewells and left at 7:40 a.m. for the
Frankfurt airport. I dropped Jane and Randall off, then turned in the rental car. We had driven a
surprising 3655 kilometers (2285 miles) in the 24 days we had the car. The final cost was $710 (less than
$30/day). We really loved that car.
We said good-bye to Randall, whose nonstop Lufthansa flight left later than ours. Our flight on Air
France left at 10:30 and we changed planes in Paris. The fight was pleasant and uneventful. We arrived a
little late, about 4 p.m. Randall's flight arrived within a few minutes of ours. Julia was there to meet us
and drove us to their home in Culpeper where we had left our car. We only stayed a few minutes before
leaving for Massanutten. We got home before 7 p.m.
