Intro Part I (Elderhostel Tour) Part II (Liguria & Lake Como) Part III HEIDELBERG Saturday, 16 October. We left the Marenbach's at 10:15 and drove to Heidelberg to visit our friends, George and Ada Bahamonde. The weather was sunny, but a bit chilly. After struggling for over 15 minutes with the one-way streets, we finally got there at 11:20. We introduced Randy, then visited for an hour before walking to the Hauptstrasse (Main Street) and following that through the center of the old town.
We walked out on the Alt Bruecke (Old Bridge) for a view of the towers and the Schloss (Castle) on the hill overlooking the Neckar River. We walked to the Corn Market where there is also a great view of the Schloss, but it was very crowded. The sunny day brought the Germans out in droves, many dressed like it was mid-summer. George and Darrell got separated from the others near the Heiligegeist Church, and we didn't join up again until both groups returned to the Bahamonde's.
We had a late lunch there, then visited the rest of the afternoon. Bob Dunn arrived at 6:30. Bob had come into the Army with Darrell in 1955. He had spent most of his life since then living in Germany. We talked for nearly another hour before leaving for Leimen, a Heidelberg suburb, where we took everyone to dinner at Geeger's restaurant. Both the food and the service were excellent. The night air was bitter cold. We said good-bye to Bob and drove back to the Bahamonde's for the night. |
