Wednesday, 22 September. The Star Clipper left Bonifacio at 5 a.m. and sailed up the east coast of Corsica, staying in easy sight of land. The weather had finally cleared, and it was sunny and calm. We slept late. After breakfast we read until lunch. Afterwards we played bridge with the Grants again until Claude's 3:30 lecture. The subjects this time were "Napoleon in Egypt" and "Napoleon in Exile." As usual, Claude's lectures were fascinating.

Our ship had docked in Bastia, in northeastern Corsica, at 4 p.m. while we were attending the lectures. We went ashore at 6:00 and had 45 minutes to wander the streets before Claude led us on a walking tour. Bastia, a large commercial port and the second largest city on Corsica, was neither particularly beautiful nor interesting. We had dinner at 8:30, and the ship sailed at 11:30 p.m. in calm seas. Our next destination was still uncertain. We were scheduled to stop at Portofino, but Captain Hensson indicated that we might go to Portovenere instead.
